Liverpool-based filmmaker/electroacoustic improvisor and composer Andrew Leslie Hooker returns to Entr’acte with the surreal, abstract, monochrome film The Sin King, produced between 2004-2014 and soundtracked by the great Philip Jeck, with additional sound design and material “deconstructed and reinterpreted” by Giuseppe Ielasi.
The result of some ten years in the making, The Sin King is a tortuously complex and multi-layered thing wrapping a variety of texts and original paintings into a self-contained A/V organism that will take at least another 10 years for us to figure out...if we ever get there.
But we’d also gauge that “figuring it out” is not really the point (although there is some further reading online if you want to go there) and if we just allow ourselves to travel with the piece, we’re rewarded with an absorbingly sensual and narcotic experience that reveals something truly beautiful. And with an ensemble cast of inputs such as this, we’d hardly expect anything less.
